Be Still: Thoughts from a Prayer Closet

“Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.” Deuteronomy 7:9 (NKJV)

God is El Emunah-the faithful God. He is the One we can always count on, whose promises never fail, and whom we can trust even when life feels uncertain. Through every season, He remains steadfast, loving, and true.

Recently, the Lord impressed these words upon my heart: “Be still.”

In 1 Kings 19:1-12, we read about the prophet Elijah, who, after an extraordinary victory, found himself discouraged, exhausted, and afraid when Queen Jezebel threatened his life. Overwhelmed, he fled into the wilderness, where God lovingly provided food, water, and rest.

Later, at Mount Horeb, Elijah witnessed a mighty wind, an earthquake, and a fire. Yet the Lord was not in these displays of power. After the fire came a still, small voice.

What a beautiful reminder that God does not always speak in the ways we expect. Sometimes, we must quiet the noise around us and slow down enough to listen for His gentle voice.

We live in a world that constantly demands our attention. There is always something to accomplish, somewhere to go, or another responsibility waiting to be fulfilled. Even good things can overwhelm us when we neglect to spend quiet time in God's presence.

When we pray or open His Word, and sit quietly before Him, we make room to listen. He offers wisdom when we need direction, peace when our hearts are troubled, and grace to guide us through every season. Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is not more, but simply be still and trust Him.

As I reflect on these words, I am reminded of the heart behind Calvary Closets. Organizing our homes can bring a sense of order and peace to our everyday routines. In the same way, setting aside a quiet place to spend time with the Lord can help us step away from life's distractions and draw near to Him.

Perhaps today, the Lord is inviting you to pause, find peace in His presence, release the pressure to do more, and remember who He is. He is El Emunah-the faithful God. Just as He cared for Elijah in his weariness, He cares for you. Whatever you are facing, you can trust that El Roi has not forgotten you.

May we learn to quiet our hearts, rest in His faithfulness, and listen for His gentle voice. In the stillness, may we be reminded that we are loved, His grace is sufficient, and His faithfulness reaches far beyond what we can see.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10 (NKJV)
